How to Handle Criticism

How to Handle Criticism

This week the world watched as Fergie sang her rendition of the National Anthem for the NBA All-Star Game. Afterwards, it was quickly clear that a lot of people just didn’t like it. How you handle criticism can make or break you. Fergie handled it like a champ! I kept my eye on this story as it unfolded because I wanted to see how she dealt with the criticism. She quickly and pointedly made a statement the next day. It was short and to the point. And guess what? Everyone quickly forgot about it. They were already on to the next subject.

This is a memorable teaching moment for people who are in the public eye and also for people who are in the spotlight who maybe didn’t intend to be there but somehow ended up there. There are cameras everywhere and no one is ever on the best behavior 100% of the time. Heck, it could even happen to me eventually. How you handle that pressure can be everything as to how you recover from the incident. If you address it quickly and head-on and then move on, chances are extremely good that everyone else will do the same. I’ve seen celebrities and non-celebrities try to ignore a situation and it just drags on and on and on and it keeps people talking about it. In just about every instance, when the person makes a statement quickly, everyone moves on just as quickly and on to the next thing. So keep this in mind as you put yourself out there with your music, your band, and your businesses. Make a decision now on how you will handle it if something like this happens to you so you can already know how you will address the situation and how you will move on.

We talked a little bit about this in my Facebook group this week. Click here to join if you are interested in learning how to promote your music and shows online!
